Memo to the Author

To: Rick Riordan
From: Grace Wei

Re: Percy Jackson and the Olypians-The Titan's Curse

Dear Mr. Riordan,
I have taken this time to praise, ask and suggest a few things about your novel "Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The TItan's Curse". First of all, I would like to start off by saying how I truly enjoy the story line, concept and idea of the book. It is written about Greek mythology which I have always showed much interest in and has definitely captured my attention on how well the novel pieces together, part-by-part. Your humour and sarcastic jokes have made me crack up a lot because of your great writing and wording. I would like to ask why you chose Percy to be the son of Poseidon. Everyone knows Zeus as the king of the Gods and since Percy is the main character, do you think it would have been a better idea to make him the son of Zeus instead? Is there some purpose behind him as the son of Poseidon? Also, is it true in real life Greek mythology that "mist" exists or did you create the "mist" to fit into your tie-in of Greek mythology and reality in the book. Do demigods usually never have much contact with there parents too? This is just a suggestion, but I think that Bianca di Angelo should have been "alive" for longer. Since she is the daughter of Hades, one of the big three, I think there could have been some more details about her before she died. I wish her character was a bit more developed in a sense that we didn't know much about her anyways and she is gone just like that. I think it happened all to sudden, so just keep that in mind. Overall, this was definitely an amazing book and is at the top of my favourites. Please continue writing!

Proud Piece #2: Editorial

Letter to the Editor: Bias for Gender and Infanticide

Dear Editor, April 16th, 1992
There have been many problems going around my town about gender discrimination. I’m sick and tired of it of all those newly-wed couples arguing about what gender their child is going to be, my family included.
The one-child policy rule enforced by Chinese Leader, Deng Xiaoping in 1979 created something I like to call “bias for boys”. The one-child policy was taken by surprise to many of the people, and was taken seriously that if you gave birth to more than one child, heavy taxes would be loaded up on you. It was created so China, the country with the largest population in the world could reduce its population before it ended up being too much to handle. It’s already predicted that by a couple of decades, China’s population would grow way too much more then the food supply that it will need. And this definitely caused towns like mine to worry.
This policy has been taken very seriously by all the town folk and cause bias of gender. Everyone wants and aims to give birth to a boy.
Why are boys preferred? It’s because of their natural dominant position in their family or society. Taking up the family businesses, from a parent’s perspective, would all be put on the shoulders of their son when they passed away. For hundreds of years now, men have always had the first hand in education, always went out to work and were always the ones to depend on leaving us girls behind them, mingling like we’re the weaker souls in society.
Now, the question is: Where are all the girls? The boy-to-girl ratio in 1990 was 111 boys to 100 girls and I’m sure boys have already surpassed that number by now. And since every family hopes for a male child, not everyone can, resulting in some very serious problems.
Female infanticide is one of them, which is intentionally killing infant girls. I’m tired of how ridiculous people can get, how out of control. My uncle is pressuring my aunt to give birth to a boy. I hear they’re planning female abortion before the fetus fully develops if it turns out to be a girl, and will abort the baby. I think this is going way out of control.
Someone needs to control this biasness before the female population decreases to a low level. I need to take a stand for all the females because this is truly gender discrimination and should not be tolerated by any of us.

This is my editorial for a newspaper project about the book Throwaway Daughter by Ting Xing Ye. I chose this piece of work because I feel that it reveals my very serious and formal part of my writing. I think that I wrote this in the right format and have created a persuasive paragraph for a good argument like this.

Proud Piece #1: Mountain

A mountain is…
A scenic view
Where the sun hides
A Greek god’s kingdom
A snow covered knoll
The peak of the land
Where your dreams live on
The ladder to the stars
Lost paradise in the distance
The top of the world
The stairway to heaven

I chose this poem as my proud piece because it shows the more creative side to my writing. I like how I described the mountain as these things using metaphors to make it a lot more interesting and intriguing. I worked hard on this poem to describe very well, how I would imagine what a mountain is.
