Proud Piece #2: Editorial

Letter to the Editor: Bias for Gender and Infanticide

Dear Editor, April 16th, 1992
There have been many problems going around my town about gender discrimination. I’m sick and tired of it of all those newly-wed couples arguing about what gender their child is going to be, my family included.
The one-child policy rule enforced by Chinese Leader, Deng Xiaoping in 1979 created something I like to call “bias for boys”. The one-child policy was taken by surprise to many of the people, and was taken seriously that if you gave birth to more than one child, heavy taxes would be loaded up on you. It was created so China, the country with the largest population in the world could reduce its population before it ended up being too much to handle. It’s already predicted that by a couple of decades, China’s population would grow way too much more then the food supply that it will need. And this definitely caused towns like mine to worry.
This policy has been taken very seriously by all the town folk and cause bias of gender. Everyone wants and aims to give birth to a boy.
Why are boys preferred? It’s because of their natural dominant position in their family or society. Taking up the family businesses, from a parent’s perspective, would all be put on the shoulders of their son when they passed away. For hundreds of years now, men have always had the first hand in education, always went out to work and were always the ones to depend on leaving us girls behind them, mingling like we’re the weaker souls in society.
Now, the question is: Where are all the girls? The boy-to-girl ratio in 1990 was 111 boys to 100 girls and I’m sure boys have already surpassed that number by now. And since every family hopes for a male child, not everyone can, resulting in some very serious problems.
Female infanticide is one of them, which is intentionally killing infant girls. I’m tired of how ridiculous people can get, how out of control. My uncle is pressuring my aunt to give birth to a boy. I hear they’re planning female abortion before the fetus fully develops if it turns out to be a girl, and will abort the baby. I think this is going way out of control.
Someone needs to control this biasness before the female population decreases to a low level. I need to take a stand for all the females because this is truly gender discrimination and should not be tolerated by any of us.

This is my editorial for a newspaper project about the book Throwaway Daughter by Ting Xing Ye. I chose this piece of work because I feel that it reveals my very serious and formal part of my writing. I think that I wrote this in the right format and have created a persuasive paragraph for a good argument like this.
